San Bernardino Pest Animal Trapping Tip of the Month:
How to Safely Send Away San Bernardino Snakes
As a native, I understand how scary it can be to come across a snake, especially if you think that San Bernardino snake might be venomous. Here are some methods for getting rid of snakes naturally or keeping snakes away altogether.
Leave Alone
The best thing to do about a snake in the yard is to leave it alone. Sometimes a snake is just passing through and will be gone shortly. Some California snakes come in handy to deal with other pests in the yard. Snakes eat mice, slugs, crickets, rats, moles and numerous insects. Some harmless snakes, such as king snakes, milk snakes and indigo snakes, actually eat venomous snakes. This can be very helpful to people living in the United States.
Snake Trap or Fence
There are also humane ways to trap a San Bernardino snake. Many snake traps are equipped with the irresistible smell of a live mouse. Glue based snake traps are popular because they seal the snake in place until it gets removed from the property.
Clean Yard
Snakes love to hide, especially in places where they can keep cool. Keep your grass cut short and shrubs trimmed. Short grass and shrubs make it much easier to spot a California snake that has gotten in the yard. Also, do not store wood piles in the yard as they are very popular hiding spots for snakes. Mulch your yard with sharp items like holly leaves, pine cones, rock chips and even egg shells. These materials are very uncomfortable for a snake to slither around. Keep your yard as dry as possible. Fix any drainage problems right away and get rid of any standing water features, such as bird baths.
Protect Outdoor Pets
If you have outdoor pets such as chickens or rabbits, wrap hardware cloth around their cages. Be sure to also cover the floor. Keep the cage door closed at all times so that a snake cannot get in. When any element of the animal cage needs repairing or replacing, do it immediately.
Seal Home
Every Spring and Fall check the outside of your home for possible snake entry points. Seal any gaps you have under doors or around windows. Use screen covers on all of your drains and vents such as HVAC, dryer, bathroom and gas. If you have a problem with mice get that fixed so that San Bernardino snakes will not be so compelled to enter your house.
Have It Moved
If you insist on getting the snake out of your yard there are a couple of ideas for removing it yourself. Keep your distance and use a broom to push the snake away. If you are sure the snake is harmless, put on a pair of gloves and pick up the snake and relocate it. Hire a professional animal control worker if you cannot do it yourself.
