How to Scare a San Bernardino Rat Away

Rats come to your home in search of food and shelter. They multiply at an alarming rate and spread diseases. They create havoc by chewing through everything and can even cause fire accidents when they chew the wiring. Once a San Bernardino rat enters immediate action must be taken. They must not be allowed to settle. Trapping and chasing them away can provide temporary relief to the problem. Steps must be taken to prevent them from coming again. Once a rat is aware of the favorable environment they will attempt to come back. Their scent may attract other rats. Predators like snakes may also choose to visit. Rats can be made to leave if they are scared and the environment becomes unfavorable. Here are some tips and tricks to keep them away.

Presence of a predator
Rats are scared of many animals. They are terrified of California snakes, owls, dogs and cats. Having a pet cat is a strong deterrent. Not everyone is a pet lover. If you do not want to have a pet a good alternative is to have predator scent. Predator urine is available in the market. Spraying areas where you feel the presence of rats frighten them and they leave. Owl feather has also proven effective.

Other repellents
Strong smelling substances like ammonia, camphor, peppermint oil and onions can be used. A cotton ball soaked in ammonia is placed in a plastic dish. This is kept in areas where the San Bernardino rats inhabit.

Use of strobe lights
Evictor strobe lights are very simple and easy way to get rid of rats from the attic. Placing a few lights in the attic is enough. These lights emit a blinding strobe effect. The lights do not scare but annoy the rats. Their eyes become fatigued and they are uncomfortable. They immediately try to relocate and move away.

Trapping
Traps can be used to catch California rats. There are traps which kill them or those that catch them alive. Killing is inhumane and messy to clean. Poisons also kill them. They may be risky if you have children or pets. Rats may die in difficult to reach places and create an awful stench. When catching them live drive a distance and let them free.

Once the home is rid of San Bernardino rats it is important to keep them from re-entering. 1. Inspect your roof and walls and carefully note all gaps, holes and cracks.
2. Fill all holes and gaps with caulk or putty before sealing. Steel wool can be used to fill small gaps. Rats do not like to chew them as bits of wire harm their mouth.
3. Cover vents with screen covers.
4. Place repellents in attics, corners, and other places where you found them. Change and refresh them regularly.
5. Do not have any easy source of food inside or outside. Keep your home and yard clean.
6. Secure all trash cans with lids and empty them regularly.
7. Have secure fence with netting.
8. Keep bird feeders away from the house and also trim plants near the house.
